Walking a Cat

In case you missed it, I polled you guys on whether or not my sister's cat was fat. Here are the results. However, some readers brought up the idea of walking the cat. I imagine that would go something like this:

Guess this means I need to go find a kitty harness.

  1. I have seen people walking their cats before on occasion--and once I even saw someone walking a rabbit. However, I will never be attempting this. We tried it once with our really old cat and she freaked out, peed all over the place and basically tried to hang herself with the leash.

In other words, we just cut down her food. Good luck!

  2. My neighbor's walked their cat. I didn't believe it either, but then I saw it. It probably takes a special breed of cat to pull off. The bonus of walking a cat is at least people don't say "who's walking who" like they do when you're walking a dog, as though that has ever been funny.

  3. putting a cat on a leash turns them into dead weight. i had a harness and a leash for my cat and he just laid there like a confused lump.

to exercise a cat, it's all about the laser pointer.

  4. There's a woman in my neighbourhood who walks her cat and the cat seems totally fine with it.

That would never fly with my cat though. I used a laser pointer to help my cat exercise. She cannot resist chasing the red dot.

  5. Our cats get most of their exercise by chasing each other around the house. Or jumping on bubbles when one of their staff (me) takes time to blow some for them. Somehow, I don't think they'd take too kindly to a leash. Years ago, my father bought a cat leash and put it on my daughter's pet rabbit. (Not an easy task, I assure you!) Then my mother attempted to take the rabbit for a walk around our yard. Let's just say the rabbit wasn't interested, but WE sure got a lot of exercise... assuming laughing qualifies as exercise.

  6. Maybe you need to set a better example for the cat. Practice what you preach and get walkin! ;)

  7. I had a harness for my cat when I was a kid. He mostly rolled around on the ground or I carried him. We had a leash law for cats where I lived. I used to take him on car rides. Poor cat, but at least I was cool (no I wasn't)and that's the most important part.

P.S. My cat's name was "Fat Cat" so walking him didn't really help with his weight problem, obviously.

  8. Or you can use a carrot on a stick and lure it forward.

Or in the case of the cat, catnip on a stick?

  9. Love it. There is no walking kitties. Kitties do whatever the Hell they want. I learned that the hard way. How could people not search you for kitties? You have the cat chronicles!

  10. Have you ever walked a cat, really? I can assure you that this is EXACTLY what happens. I bought a cat harness once and took my cat out. She immediately laid down and refused to move.

  11. I've never tried walking any of our cats, though I'm seriously considering walking one of them. I worry about a violent reaction. The cat just sitting there doesn't sound too bad. I worry about the cat going nuts and clawing me half to death.
