Welp. So Much for Healthy Cookies.

Boyfriend came over this Saturday, so I decided to bake for him.

So I googled and found a basic recipe, that was pretty much exactly the same as regular chocolate chip cookies, just swapping out the white flour for whole wheat. The dough looked (and tasted) amazing. See:

They came out looking great, which as you guys know, is not always the case.

I was excited to have Boyfriend try them.

After Boyfriend managed to stop laughing and wipe the tears out of his eyes, he said this:

Sigh. You guys, I tried to be healthyish (because who are we kidding, the other ingredients are sugar and butter and chocolate chips).  Apparently, I can make things look good or taste good, but not both.

But Boyfriend still ate about 12 of them. He's so good.

  1. He's going to get diabetes trying to assure you how good you are at baking. I've never even heard of whole wheat cookies. I thought healthy cookies were called oatmeal raisin. It was your first attempt, and the batter was good, so you're a step away from an amazing creation. Don't let a single setback deter you! More cookies! And next time if they're not good, drop them off at your local college. Drunk college kids will eat anything.

  2. Ah! Same as me last weekend! I had a craving for oatmeal choc chip cookies, googled a recipe, threw them together, and THEY ARE GROSS. But Hubby is still eating them. God knows why.

  3. Silly girl. He was complimenting you. By saying he didn't like them, he was hoping nobody else would have any. Nobody else, as in secret watchers or listeners, and any other lurking predators he might not have told you about in addition to the ones you live with.

  4. If you microwave them they get softer? I never knew that!

  5. I always eat batter when I make cookies or brownies, and then once they're baked, I don't want them anymore.

I've never had whole wheat cookies before. Not so sure about that. But it was a good try! And boyfriend is the sweetest for eating them anyway :)

  6. Cookie dough is delicious. You could try 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 all purpose flour. Also, if you sub butter/oil with equal amount of unsweetened applesauce in oatmeal cookies they are very moist and a bit healthier.

  7. There is no comparing the cookie dough to the actual baked cookie; dough always wins. And there is a really good two-ingredient recipe for banana and oatmeal cookies. Not surprisingly, those two recipes are banana and oatmeal... then you can chuck some chocolate chips, walnuts, etc. in there. Really good!

  8. Yeah, I'm not always a fan of healthy things showing up in what were perfectly fine treats either.

  9. Wow! With that many chocolate chips how bad could they have been?

  10. I would use half whole wheat and half white flour. And microwaving them makes them taste like they just came out of the oven. You were on the right track. I make my wheat rolls with half white flour. Total whole wheat is too dry.

  11. My wife actually has a good recipe for healthy chocolate chip cookies (sorry I don't know it). I asked what was in them and the only ingredient I recognized was chocolate chips.

  12. I think that if you are going to make sweets, that you might as well do it properly. The key to being healthy about it is portion control. I will make a gigantic batch of chocolate chip cookies, leave some for my self and then deliver a bunch to random people I like. Doing it this way makes me seem super nice when really I'm just trying to not get fat. Win-win

  13. I love the picture of him holding all those cookies while telling you he likes them :) I agree with Ally, that if you're going to bake, the best things are made with all the 'unhealthy' stuff.

  14. I adore your apron by the way! And guys will eat ANYTHING, won't they? I forgot to put WHITE SUGAR in my cookies once and Joe ate them all, grumbling the entire time. Love this post!

  15. Aww, what a good boyfriend, eating inedible cookies just to make you feel better.

  16. Oh yes, we've tried making whole wheat cookies before, and the result was much the same. You can either have cookies that taste amazing or cookies that are healthy... but I have yet to find one that's both.

  17. Oh wow, I think this is the first time that I've ever seen boyfriend laugh like this at your baking.

I hope you learned your lesson, healthy versions of unhealthy things almost never taste good.

  18. They look really nice! That's half the battle :)

  19. Blame the flour. Maybe try it again using half wheat half white?
