Girls

Boyfriend and I watch HBO’s Girls. I decided to do a Mayor Gia-style review of it. It doesn't matter which episode I'm referring to, because my reactions pretty much stay the same.

And yet…
Every. Damn. Time.
I swear, this happens every week. I do like the show and Lena Dunham, but I can’t stand Hannah and I go through a full range of emotions about how I feel towards the other characters roughly 3-4 times an episode. It general, it flirts with that line between genuinely funny and mortifyingly embarrassing.

Do you guys watch it? And if so, am I right or am I right?

  1. Haven't see Girls being that I'm afflicted with poverty and don't have HBO (or the moral justification to torrent it). I did watch Lena Dunham's movie, Tiny Furniture, though, and if it's at all similar, the awkwardness is tough to sit through. I have enough of my own general life embarrassment, I don't need it fictionalized.

  3. There's just something about shows that make us cringe. I know I complain about them, but do you think I stop watching?

  4. I am SOOOO addicted to that show. It is a train wreck that I just have to see happen. They annoy me, make me laugh, disgust me, make me cry....Oh, you know because you watch it. I wouldn't miss an episode. Too bad it is over for the season. BUT Madmen starts!!! P.S. I think Lena is brilliant (Hannah...not so much)

  5. Hm. Is that the show where one of the girls got an internship in a fancy art gallery, and another girl opened a boutique-y clothing store? If so, I saw it once. I couldn't even try to relate.

  6. No HBO so I haven't seen it, but I was thinking of watching it on Amazon. Now I will have to! You've compelled me :)

What is it about shows that make us cringe? Why do we watch them? Sometimes I'll be sitting all alone on my couch, peeping thru my fingers because I'm so uncomfortable and I wonder why am I am doing that when I'm sitting alone in my own home??

  7. I'm a showtime girl so I've never seen it. Season 1 is at the library. I considered it for all of 30 seconds and then said no.

  8. I love this show. I love how it challenges me and makes me uncomfortable. I think Lena Dunham is a genius.

  9. I have not yet seen any episodes of this show. My resources don't flow into the mouth of the HBO monster.

  10. You forgot the slide where we have to see Lena Dunham's tits for the zillionth time.

I've watched all of Season 1, and pieces and parts of season two. I'm sure I'll have a laundry folding, Girls watching marathon sooner or later.

  11. I haven't heard of it and don't have HBO. I lead a pretty sad little existence, enamored with PBS.

    Love,

  12. I go back and forth between hating and relating to Hannah in like every episode. Mostly, though, yeah... she's a spoiled little brat. How DOES she afford an apartment? I'd love to live in NYC and not have a job and write dumb essays all day.

Shoshanna cracks me up. She's the only "girl" that I actually think I wouldn't hate in real life. Jessa (Jessa? That's her name, yes?) is the worst, I think.

  13. I've been afraid to watch it for this very reason. I cannot handle the emotional roller coaster of another show (I currently have GOT, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who-- Too many feels!).

  14. You realize of course that watching bad tv upsets your digestion so you can't enjoy the wine.

  15. I haven't watched this show but I keep hearing about it. I'm just fascinated by how many people think Lena Dunham is some kind of fat, disgusting slob of a human being because she's not, I don't know, a thimble sized model.

  16. I've gotta say I'm a big fan of the show. It portrays enough quirk and human flaws to make me feel comfortable about my own life choices. I noticed that all of the characters have first and last names that begin with the same letter: Hannah Horvath, Marnie Michaels, Jessa Johansson, Shoshana Shapiro... madness.

  17. I have such a girl crush on/sort of hate Lena Dunham. How is she so young and awesome and successful?

    UGH

  19. I feel the same way about the show. I don't really know if I like it, but I can't stop watching it. I can say that I could deal with an episode or two where Lena Dunham isn't naked.
