My Apartment is Trying to Kill Me

Remember when my appliances were against me? Well, the air conditioner is broken again:

It’s making me ridiculously hot and pissy. But that’s actually not what this post is about. It’s more about the wonky electricity:

So, last Friday was Friday the 13th. DUN DUN DA DUNNNNNN. What happened? Well, Boyfriend and I were hanging out in the living room.
Typical date night.
And roommate was cooking in the kitchen.

When all of a sudden:

Living room.

Kitchen

Luckily, we had enough electronics in order to light the apartment enough to check the circuit breaker. It was fine. I called the landlord, who said we could try to get someone to come by that night, or she’d come over the next day (for your information, landlord is NOT an electrician and would be totally useless in the apartment).

And that’s how we got an electrician to come over and fix our circuit breaker at 9pm on a Friday night.

But seriously. Is it time to move yet?

  1. Loved the drawings of the darkness! Let's hope when you move you won't have these kind of problems!

  2. Yeah, seriously, is it time for you to move yet? That fire in your wall is looking way too happy.
I'm with Workingdan. Those darkness pictures brought me back to old school cartoons.

  5. You're going to be so relieved when you finally move. End of this month right?

  6. Option 2- Drink all the wine in the dark before it gets warm.

  7. I completely understand that sometimes the wine just needs to be kept chilled. Also it is way past time to move when your landlord's solution is to check it out TOMORROW. Electricity is important and necessary.

  8. Erica had the right idea, though putting wine in the fridge makes it too cold, unless it's cheap hooch. And sex in the complete dark, wondering if the lights are going to go on again, adds a bit of a zing to the experience.

    1. It's white wine. And yes, it's cheap. Sigh.

  9. The in the dark pictures made me chuckle out loud. Your drawings seriously make my day. My power went out at my house and I literally ran outside yelling, "Is anyone else's power out?" I don't do well in those situations. Luckily I have awesome neighbors who ran an extension cord to my fridge, so I at least didn't lose any of my food.

  10. I am sure that move can't come soon enough. I applaud you that you were just pissy. When things break at night or over the weekend (and that is the ONLY time things break at my house) I don't just get pissy...I IMPLODE..and when I implode, I say lot's of really bad four letter words. It isn't cute like your story.

  11. Last year there was a hurricane that knocked our power out for 4 days. I went 4 days without beer. It was a tough time in my life. I'm glad you didn't need to go through the same.

  12. Phew! Glad you were able to save the wine! Back in January we had a severe storm and were without power for several days. Needless to say we lost everything in our fridge. The worst though was having no heat. I can live without AC (well, except in July and August) but I MUST HAVE heat, especially when there's snow on the ground outside!
    :(

  14. I think we might have the same landlord. Ours put 3 houses on the same circuit breaker. It was fine when the other 2 houses were vacant. And then the landlords came to stay in one of the houses during a bad cold snap. Every time we turned a space heater on (did I mention that these homes are unheated?) everybody's electricity went out.

  15. That sounds like an electrician who has had some wine in his fridge at one point or another, you know?

You'll be moving before you know it.

  16. Can't wait to hear exciting Gia stories when you finally move! And I agree with Pickelope...the fire looks way too happy.

  17. Sounds like you should invest in some flashlights and candles to get you through the next month. And a cooler. With ice. For the wine.

  18. I think the roommate did it on purpose. She is secretly jealous of your wine.

  19. Oh my!! I had when the electricity goes out. At least it was at night after your hair was already done ;)

  20. Great darkness pictures! When you got to the point about your wine in the fridge I had a good laugh - because I thought you were going to say, "Quick! we have to drink it before it warms up!"

  21. I have to know...

    DID YOU SAVE THE WINE???

  22. Oh shit, it's 86 degrees F here!

Anyway, did you give the electrician a glass of wine?

  23. As long as you didn't have to pay the bill to have an electrian come out at 9pm because we all know they charge and arm and a leg just like plumbers right, why is it these things happen at night or over a holiday oh yeah just to make it difficult for us because life is like that an uphill battle most of the time and when things are clear sailing you know a storm is just around the bend becuase honestly life is a bitch at times...........or is that just my life.........lol

  24. Okay, I'm clueless on what FML means. Do I want to know?

  25. Haha dude. That is super lame.

My apartment also sucks, but for less shitty reasons than that. My toilet decided to stop flushing. My hot water lasts about 5-6 minutes.. cold showers galore! My dishwasher is kinda broken. Ok yeah. It sucks.

Yay for electricians. Boo for wine emergencies.

  26. Ugh. So annoying. I hate when anything goes wrong in the house. I turn into a super-lame damsel in distress and just ask my husband to fix it. And then I'm disgusted with myself for being so helpless.

  27. And that is exactly why I drink red wine. Always perfect at room temperature.

  28. I stay in bed on Friday the 13th as things always go wrong for me.

  30. I remember having many days like those. For years I lived in a home in which nothing worked. Winters were the worst. It would get so cold, my skin would dry out and start peeling off. Attractive.

  31. LOL oh dear! it was good you managed to get an electrician out at the time - he must enjoy a glass of pinot too! x

  32. I don't know what's worse: warm wine or broken AC. I think it's a tie.

  33. That was such an experience! Haha! The power disturbance really ruined your day! Anyway, that must have been a not-so-lucky day for you. And I guess moving out is not always a good option. If you think your appliances aren't functioning, it's either you repair it or totally replace it.

  34. One shouldn’t let the wine get warm, no siree! But it was a good call to contact an electrician before the weekend. Who knows if you’ll be able to get one before Monday had you waited. Hope you’re not having the same problems in the new apartment!
